Heat Reduction Window Film
Blocks 40–82% of solar infrared before it enters your home — reducing interior temps 10–15°F and cutting cooling costs 25–35%. Our most-requested residential service April–October.
Residential window tinting blocks 40–99% of the solar heat and UV radiation that enters Houston homes through standard glass. Greenhouse Solar Control installs ceramic, security, privacy, and decorative window films for homeowners across the metro — from Montrose and the Heights to Sugar Land, Katy, and The Woodlands. With 15+ years of experience and over 12,000 completed projects, we match the right film to your windows, budget, and goals. Residential window tinting — also called residential window film installation — is the professional application of specialized film to home glass surfaces to reduce heat, block ultraviolet radiation, improve privacy, and increase energy efficiency. It is a category of window tinting focused on homes rather than commercial window tinting.
Film is applied to the interior surface of your existing windows — no glass replacement needed — and comes in ceramic, security, privacy, decorative, and solar-control configurations matched to each home. Residential window tinting delivers comparable heat reduction to full window replacement at 15–20% of the cost, and installs in a single day with zero construction disruption.
204 sunny days a year, summer highs above 97°F, and UV Index 10–11 from May through September. Houston is one of the hardest solar environments in the United States.
Houston averages 204 sunny days per year with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 97°F and humidity above 75%. That drives average residential electricity bills to $169/month — surging past $280 in July and August when cooling runs nonstop and accounts for 50–70% of the bill.
Professional heat reduction window tinting reduces solar heat gain by 40–82% depending on film and window orientation. For a typical Houston home that means $40–$70/month in summer savings — a return on investment within 2–3 years.
In Houston, professional window film typically lowers interior temperatures by 10–15°F and reduces monthly cooling costs by $40–$70 during peak season.
Houston's intense UV exposure (UV Index 10–11 from May through September) causes furniture fading, hardwood discoloration, and skin damage even indoors. Quality UV protection window film blocks 99% of UV radiation while keeping rooms naturally lit.
Without protection, south-facing interiors can show visible fading within 6–12 months. Clear UV film is virtually invisible once installed and protects hardwood floors, leather furniture, and artwork.
Stops furniture fading, hardwood discoloration, and skin damage while keeping rooms naturally lit.
Houston sits in a hurricane-prone coastal zone, where ordinary windows shatter into dangerous shards on impact from storms and break-in attempts alike. Hurricane season runs June through November.
Security and hurricane and storm protection window films hold glass fragments in place during storms and forced entry — staying on year-round with zero prep, unlike plywood or shutters. Critical for Pearland, League City, and Clear Lake homes.
Security film bonds to the glass, containing shards during a storm and slowing forced entry.
A west-facing living room in Memorial needs aggressive heat rejection; a street-level bedroom in Montrose needs privacy; a Pearland home needs shatter resistance. We install every major category.
Blocks 40–82% of solar infrared before it enters your home — reducing interior temps 10–15°F and cutting cooling costs 25–35%. Our most-requested residential service April–October.
Nano-ceramic technology rejects heat with no reflective or metallic look, keeping 50–70% visible light and zero signal interference. Our premium option and most popular upgrade.
Holds shattered glass together on impact — a barrier against break-ins, debris, and accidental breakage at a fraction of the cost of impact-rated glass.
Prevents glass from shattering into dangerous shards in high winds. Stays on year-round with zero prep — unlike plywood or shutters. Critical along the Gulf Coast.
Creates a one-way mirror effect by day — you see out, outsiders see a reflective surface. Ideal for street-facing bedrooms, baths, and home offices in close-proximity neighborhoods.
Frosted, etched, and patterned films turn plain glass into a design feature — baths, partitions, sidelights, and shower enclosures. A cost-effective alternative to etched glass.
Blocks up to 99.9% of UVA/UVB — the wavelengths behind fading and skin damage. Virtually invisible once installed. Best for homes with hardwood, leather, or art.
Reduces skylight heat gain 40–70% while preserving daylight. Skylights face the sun directly most of the day — we install on flat and angled glass with overhead equipment.
2–6 hours for a typical Houston home. Bubble-free adhesion, film-to-glass compatibility checked on every window, most jobs done in a single visit.
We inspect every window in person — glass type (single-pane, double-pane, Low-E, tempered), orientation, frame condition, and any HOA restrictions. Free, and it takes 30–45 minutes.
We recommend specific films per window — ceramic for a south-facing living room, privacy film for a street-facing bedroom, frosted for a bath. 3M, XPEL VISION, and other professional lines only.
Each window is cleaned in a multi-step process — debris removal, a distilled-water and soap scrub, then a final squeegee pass to eliminate particles down to 1mm. Trapped residue causes visible defects.
Film is applied with a soapy slip solution between glass and adhesive, allowing precise repositioning for a bubble-free fit. Each piece is cut to the window's exact dimensions on-site.
Excess solution is squeegeed from center to edges, forcing out all air and moisture. Edges are sealed flush with the frame to prevent peeling and ensure a clean, lasting finish.
Film cures fully in 15–30 days depending on humidity. Slight haziness during curing is normal and clears completely. Aftercare: no cleaning for 30 days and no touching the film surface.
$6–$14 per square foot depending on film type, number of windows, and accessibility. A typical 3-bedroom home with 12–18 windows runs $1,200–$3,500 total.
Tap a film type to estimate your project
| Film Type | Cost Per Sq Ft | Typical Home (12–18 windows) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard heat reduction film | $6–$8/sq ft | $1,200–$1,800 |
| Ceramic window tint | $9–$14/sq ft | $1,800–$3,500 |
| Privacy / one-way mirror film | $7–$10/sq ft | $1,400–$2,200 |
| Security / safety film (4–8 mil) | $8–$12/sq ft | $1,600–$2,800 |
| Decorative / frosted film | $7–$11/sq ft | $1,400–$2,400 |
| UV-only clear film | $6–$9/sq ft | $1,200–$2,000 |
Three factors most affect cost: film type (ceramic costs more than standard reflective), total glass area, and accessibility (second-story windows, skylights, and windows with built-in blinds take more labor). Residential window tinting typically pays for itself in 2–3 years — a $2,500 whole-home ceramic install that saves $60/month recovers its cost in about 42 months, and the film carries a lifetime warranty. See our complete residential window tinting cost guide.
We want every installation to last 15+ years — so we'll tell you when film isn't the right solution. Our free assessment catches each of these before we quote.
Dual-pane windows with existing Low-E coatings. Certain films on Low-E glass can trap heat between the panes, causing thermal stress, seal failure, fogging, and cracking. We check every window and only recommend films approved by both the film and window manufacturer.
Windows with existing seal failure. If your double-pane windows already show condensation between the panes, the seal has failed — film won't fix it and may accelerate deterioration. We'll recommend glass replacement first.
Windows in very poor frame condition. If a frame is rotting, warped, or pulling away from the wall, film can't address the structural issue. We'll flag any window where frame condition would compromise adhesion or longevity.
HOA-restricted properties. Some Houston-area HOAs restrict reflective or dark films. We review your HOA guidelines as part of the assessment to ensure compliance before installation.
Window tinting is a long-term investment — installer expertise, film quality, and application technique all matter. Here's what we bring.
