3M Safety Series — S40, S70, S80
Basic shatter protection and safety-glazing compliance. Best for residential windows and interior glass partitions where holding glass in place is the goal.
Protect your property from break-ins, storms, and accidents — without replacing your windows. 3M authorized installer serving the Houston metro for 15+ years.
Security window film strengthens existing glass to resist impacts from break-ins, storm debris, and accidental collisions — holding shattered glass in place instead of letting it spray across a room. Professional-grade security film ranges from 4 mil to 14 mil in thickness and can withstand repeated blows from blunt objects for 30 seconds to several minutes, giving occupants time to react and first responders time to arrive. Greenhouse Solar Control has installed security film on thousands of Houston-area properties over 15+ years, including both residential security window film and commercial security window film applications. We are a 3M authorized dealer and offer free on-site security assessments with transparent pricing. Call (281) 961-3058 or book a free estimate online.
A multi-layer polyester laminate bonded to the interior glass surface — engineered specifically for impact resistance, not just heat or glare.
A durable optical coating on the interior face that resists daily abrasion and cleaning — keeping the film clear and distortion-free for years.
Security window film is a multi-layer polyester laminate bonded to the interior surface of existing glass using a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Unlike standard solar or decorative films, security film is engineered specifically for impact resistance. When glass breaks, the film holds the fragments together in a "spider web" pattern — preventing the glass from collapsing inward and creating a barrier that an intruder, storm debris, or accident must penetrate through multiple layers of tear-resistant material.
Film thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Residential security film typically starts at 4 mil for basic shatter protection and goes up to 8 mil for forced-entry resistance. Commercial and high-risk applications use 8 mil to 14 mil film with anchoring attachment systems that bond the film to the window frame, not just the glass. The difference matters: without frame attachment, a hard enough impact can push the entire filmed glass pane out of its frame even though the glass stays intact. To see how security film compares to heat, privacy, and decorative options, compare all window film types.
Professional security film is tested to ANSI Z97.1, CPSC 16 CFR 1201, and — for hurricane grades — ASTM E1886/E1996.
Professional security window film is tested against ANSI Z97.1 (safety glazing) and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 (impact resistance). Hurricane-rated films must also meet ASTM E1886/E1996 large-missile impact criteria — the same standard used for hurricane shutters and impact-resistant glass in coastal Texas construction.
The right film thickness, attachment method, and coverage plan depend on your building's risk profile, window configuration, and local code requirements.

Both residential and commercial security film share the same core benefit: they convert standard annealed glass into a held-in-place barrier at a fraction of the cost of replacing windows with laminated safety glass or impact-rated glazing.
We install the full 3M Safety & Security line — factory-direct, with the 3M manufacturer warranty plus our own workmanship guarantee. All grades block 99%+ UV.
Basic shatter protection and safety-glazing compliance. Best for residential windows and interior glass partitions where holding glass in place is the goal.
Forced-entry delay — holds against repeated blows for 30+ seconds — plus 99%+ UV rejection. Best for ground-floor residential and small commercial storefronts.
Maximum forced-entry resistance, blast-mitigation rated, and optically clear. Best for high-risk commercial, government buildings, and hurricane-prone properties.
We source film directly from 3M's distribution network — never third-party or gray-market stock — so warranty coverage and product authenticity are verified on every installation. The Ultra and Scotchshield lines are optically clear, adding security without changing how your windows look.

Standard glass is the weakest point in any Houston building envelope during a storm: once glass breaks, wind pressure enters the structure and can cause catastrophic roof failure within minutes. Security film rated to ASTM E1886/E1996 provides large-missile impact resistance — and unlike shutters, it works 24/7, protecting against break-ins and accidents year-round without manual deployment.

A standard residential window can be broken through in under 3 seconds. Security film turns that into a 30-second to 3-minute ordeal.
Glass is the fastest entry point for burglars. Houston police data shows that forced entry through windows and glass doors accounts for a significant portion of residential burglaries in Harris County, concentrated in neighborhoods near major highways with quick escape routes. When a burglar strikes a filmed window, the glass shatters but stays bonded to the film. Penetrating it requires repeated, noisy blows — each one extending the exposure time most burglars won't risk.
The intruder strikes the glass. It fractures but does not collapse — the film holds all fragments in the frame.
Repeated strikes stretch the film, but multi-layer polyester resists tearing. 8 mil holds 30+ seconds; 12 mil resists 2+ minutes.
Extended entry time triggers alarms and attracts attention. Most burglars abandon the attempt within 15–30 seconds of unexpected resistance.

Entry-level security film bonds shattered glass together and brings standard annealed glass into safety-glazing compliance. It's near-invisible at 87–90% light transmission, making it ideal where shatter protection matters but forced-entry resistance isn't the priority.
With frame attachment, 8 mil film withstands 30+ seconds of repeated blows and meets hurricane impact criteria. For most Houston homeowners this is the sweet spot: meaningful forced-entry delay and storm protection at a mid-range cost, while staying nearly invisible.
12 mil film resists sustained attack for 2+ minutes and, with required frame attachment, delivers full ASTM E1886/E1996 hurricane performance. This is the tier for ground-floor storefronts, lobbies, and Houston properties in hurricane-exposed locations.
The heaviest tier, engineered for blast overpressure and the highest-threat environments. Always installed with a mechanical attachment system. Reserved for government, critical infrastructure, and high-security commercial facilities.
Our most common picks: most Houston homeowners find 8 mil with frame attachment gives the best balance of break-in protection, storm resistance, and cost. For commercial ground-floor glass, 12 mil with a wet-glaze attachment system is our standard recommendation.
Film thickness is the primary cost driver. Every window is measured during a free on-site assessment before any price is quoted.
Factors that affect your cost: Film thickness is the primary driver — moving from 4 mil to 12 mil roughly triples material cost. Frame attachment adds $3–$6/sq ft but is essential for forced-entry and hurricane protection. Window accessibility matters — second-floor or hard-to-reach glass adds labor. Total glass area determines the final price.
Get Your Free Security Film EstimateFive steps from free assessment to final inspection — including the Houston-humidity cure period most installers don't explain.
We inspect every window, measure glass dimensions, identify risk points (ground-floor exposure, door sidelights, patio sliders), and recommend the right film thickness and attachment method. About 30–45 minutes for a typical home — always free.
Each window is cleaned with a razor scraper and lint-free solution to remove debris, adhesive residue, and mineral deposits. Security film adhesion depends on a perfectly clean surface — any contamination creates weak points in the bond.
Each panel is cut to exact measurements and applied to the interior glass with a soapy slip solution that allows precise repositioning before the adhesive activates. We squeegee out all air and water, working center to edges to prevent trapped bubbles.
For forced-entry and hurricane-rated installs, we apply a structural wet-glaze silicone system that bonds the film edges to the window frame — preventing the entire glass-and-film unit from being pushed inward on impact. It cures to full strength in 48–72 hours.
Security film takes 30–45 days to fully cure in Houston's humidity. Slight haziness and small water bubbles are normal during this period — they disappear completely as moisture evaporates through the film. We schedule a follow-up inspection to verify adhesion.
Security film is effective, but it has real limitations we communicate to every customer before installation.
It is not bulletproof glass. No window film stops a bullet. If ballistic protection is required, laminated ballistic glazing (starting at $100+/sq ft) is the only certified option.
It delays entry — it doesn't prevent it. A determined attacker with enough time and the right tools will eventually breach filmed glass. Film works best as part of a layered system alongside alarms, cameras, and reinforced locks. It buys time; it doesn't eliminate the threat.
Film without frame attachment has limited forced-entry resistance. A film-only install holds shattered glass together, but a strong impact can push the entire pane out of its frame. For break-in and hurricane protection, frame attachment is essential — not optional.
Existing window condition matters. Cracked, chipped, or seal-failed windows should be replaced before applying film. Applying film to compromised glass can accelerate failure and void both warranties.
We'll tell you if film isn't your best option. If your windows, frames, or risk profile would be better served by laminated safety glass, hurricane shutters, or a different film type, we'll recommend that instead. Our goal is the right solution — not just a sale.
