Hurricane & Storm Protection Window Film in Houston, TX
Hurricane and storm protection window film is a security and safety film that helps hold broken glass fragments together after the glass is struck or breaks — so a broken pane is less likely to fall away as loose, dangerous shards. Greenhouse Solar Control installs security and safety window film for Houston-area homes. Please note: window film does not prevent glass from breaking, does not make ordinary glass hurricane-rated, and does not replace impact-rated windows or storm shutters. With 15+ years serving the Houston metro area and over 12,000 residential installations completed, we provide free on-site window assessments and professional installation.
What Is Storm & Safety Window Film?
A thicker security-grade film applied to the inside of your existing glass, designed to help keep a broken pane together in the frame.
Storm and safety window film is a durable, multi-layer film bonded to the interior surface of your existing residential glass. It is thicker and tougher than everyday solar tint, and its purpose is different: rather than mainly managing heat and glare, it is built to help hold a pane together once the glass has been struck or broken.
When glass breaks behind this kind of film, the film membrane helps keep the broken pieces bonded together in place instead of scattering into the room as loose shards. That fragment-holding behavior is the honest, supportable benefit of the film — the same principle that makes safety and security film useful against break-ins and everyday accidental breakage. It is also known as storm protection film, safety window film, or shatter-resistant window film.
What This Film Does — and What It Does Not Do
We want you to have honest expectations before you spend a dollar.
- Helping hold broken glass fragments together in the frame after the glass is struck or breaks.
- Reducing loose flying shards from a broken pane.
- Making glass harder to clear quickly during an attempted break-in.
- Year-round benefits when you choose a film that also rejects heat and blocks the majority of UV light.
The same fragment-holding property also supports year-round security. Our security window film installation page covers the full range of safety and security options for both homes and businesses.
Why Houston Homeowners Consider Storm Film
The upper Texas Gulf Coast sees hurricanes and severe storms, and broken windows are one of the ways a storm does damage inside a home.
Houston sits on the upper Texas Gulf Coast, where hurricanes and strong storms are a regular part of life. When a window breaks during a storm, the loose glass and the opening it leaves behind can lead to further damage inside the home. Storm and safety film is one layer some homeowners choose to help keep a broken pane together in its frame rather than scattering across the room.
It is not a substitute for impact-rated windows or storm shutters, and it does not stop glass from breaking. What it can do is reduce loose flying shards from a pane that has already been struck, while adding everyday security and — when paired with a heat-rejecting film — the same year-round comfort benefits as our heat reduction window tinting in Houston. Greenhouse Solar Control serves the entire Houston metro area within our 50-mile service area. Explore all our residential window tinting services or call (281) 961-3058 for a free assessment.
How We Install Storm & Safety Film
A careful, measured process — because a thicker film demands precise fit and a clean application.
Safety and storm film is thicker than standard solar tint and calls for careful handling and precise edge-to-edge coverage. Here is how a typical installation goes:
Free On-Site Window Assessment
We inspect every window: glass type, frame material, window age, and seal condition. Safety and storm film is not recommended for windows with existing seal failure or cracked frames, and we identify those issues before quoting. We also check for existing Low-E coatings on dual-pane windows.
Custom Film Cutting & Edge Preparation
Each pane is measured carefully, and the film is cut on-site rather than from standard templates. We prepare the edges to maximize glass coverage while leaving room for a clean sealant line at the frame.
Wet Application & Positioning
Film is applied wet using a mounting solution that lets us position it precisely on the glass. We work from the center outward with professional squeegees to move out trapped air and moisture for a clear, even finish.
Edge Sealing to the Frame
For safety and storm film, we can seal the film edge to the window frame so the film is anchored around the pane, not just adhered to the glass face. This helps the film keep a broken pane together in the frame.
Cure Time & Post-Installation Care
The adhesive needs a curing period in Houston's humidity. During this time, slight haziness or small water bubbles are normal and clear on their own. Avoid cleaning filmed windows during the initial cure, then clean with a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.

When Storm Film Is Not the Right Choice
Storm and safety film suits many Houston homes, but not every situation. We assess every property first and will tell you honestly if film is not the best option.
- Windows have existing seal failure on dual-pane units. Adding thick film to a window with a failed seal can add thermal stress. We test seal integrity during our free assessment and will recommend glass replacement before filming if needed.
- Window frames are structurally compromised. Edge sealing bonds the film to the frame. If the frame is rotted, corroded, or warped, that seal cannot hold, so frame repair or replacement should come first.
- The home already has impact-rated windows. If your windows are already impact-rated, adding film provides little additional benefit. We will confirm what you already have before recommending film.
- You want true rated storm protection. If your goal is a tested storm rating, impact-rated replacement windows or storm shutters are the appropriate products — film is not a substitute for them. Film is a good fit when you want to keep functional windows and add a fragment-holding safety layer.
