Window tint percentage calculator

Enter your factory glass VLT and aftermarket film VLT to see the combined tint percentage instantly. Combined VLT = factory × film ÷ 100 — the math isn't intuitive, which is why this calculator exists. The final number determines both how the tint looks and whether it meets legal limits.

Calculate your combined tint VLT

Set the factory glass VLT (typically 70–90% for residential, 70–85% for automotive) and the aftermarket film VLT.

78%

Untinted glass is typically 70–90% VLT (auto 70–85%).

How window tint percentage works

Window tint percentage measures Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the amount of visible light that passes through the film and glass combined. A 50% tint allows half of visible light through, while a 5% tint (often called "limo tint") blocks 95% of visible light.

When you layer aftermarket tint over factory glass that already has some tint, the combined VLT drops. The formula multiplies the two values: factory glass at 80% VLT with a 35% VLT film produces a combined VLT of approximately 28%. That's why this calculator exists — the math isn't intuitive, and the final result determines both appearance and legal compliance.

Different film types achieve the same VLT with different performance characteristics. A ceramic window tint at 35% VLT rejects significantly more heat than a dyed film at the same percentage because ceramic particles block infrared energy without reducing visible light further. To understand how film types differ beyond just VLT, compare window film types side by side.

Professional window tinting in Houston

Once you know your target VLT, the next step is choosing the right film and having it professionally installed. Greenhouse Solar Control has completed over 12,000 window film installations across the Houston metro area since opening more than 15 years ago.

For homeowners looking to cut cooling costs, professional heat reduction window tinting using ceramic or dual-reflective films blocks 40–82% of solar infrared heat — reducing interior temperatures by 10–15°F without darkening your view. Our full range of residential window tinting services in Houston covers heat reduction, UV protection, privacy, security, decorative, and hurricane protection films for every window type and budget.

Tint percentage — answered

VLT meaning, calculation method, best percentage for heat, privacy thresholds, Texas legal limits, Houston cost, and DIY vs professional.

Window tint percentage is the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) rating of a film — the percentage of visible light the film allows through the glass. A 30% tint allows 30% of visible light in and blocks 70%. Lower percentages mean darker tint. This number does not measure heat rejection or UV protection, which depend on film construction, not just VLT.
Multiply the factory glass VLT by the aftermarket film VLT. For example, factory glass at 78% VLT combined with a 20% VLT film produces approximately 15.6% combined VLT (0.78 × 0.20 = 0.156). Use our free calculator above for instant results.
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission, measured as a percentage from 0% (fully opaque) to 100% (fully transparent). Standard untinted automotive glass typically has a VLT of 70–85%. Standard residential glass ranges from 75–90% VLT depending on manufacturer and whether Low-E coatings are present.
For maximum heat reduction in Houston homes, a 25–35% VLT ceramic window tint delivers the best balance of heat rejection and natural light. Ceramic films reject 40–82% of solar infrared heat regardless of their VLT rating, meaning you can block significant heat without making rooms feel dark. For south- and west-facing windows receiving direct Houston sun, our installers typically recommend 30% VLT ceramic film, which reduces interior surface temperatures by 10–15°F. A 20% VLT tint provides strong daytime privacy — people outside see a reflective or dark surface rather than the room interior. At night with interior lights on, 20% tint alone does not provide full privacy because the light differential reverses visibility. For 24-hour privacy, combine 20% VLT film with dual-reflective or frosted film.
Texas law allows 25% VLT on front side windows and any darkness on rear side and back windows for passenger vehicles. Front windshields may only have tint along the top 5 inches (the AS-1 line) or with a medical exemption. These rules apply to vehicles — residential and commercial buildings have no VLT restrictions in Texas. For full details on exemptions and enforcement, see our complete guide to Texas tint laws.
Professional residential window tinting in Houston costs $6–$14 per square foot depending on film type. A typical 3-bedroom Houston home with 12–15 windows runs $1,200–$2,800 total. Ceramic films cost more than standard reflective or dyed films but deliver significantly better heat rejection and longevity. Commercial projects are priced per square foot based on access complexity and film specification. See our window tinting cost guide for detailed Houston pricing by film type and project scope.
Professional installation is strongly recommended for residential window film. Factory-grade ceramic and security films require wet application, precise trimming around seals, and bubble-free placement that determines both appearance and warranty validity. Improper installation causes peeling, bubbling, and premature failure — voiding manufacturer warranties and potentially damaging window seals on dual-pane units. Greenhouse Solar Control provides residential window tinting services in Houston with a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials, free on-site estimates, and same-week scheduling for most projects.
