Window tint percentage calculator
Enter your factory glass VLT and aftermarket film VLT to see the combined tint percentage instantly. Combined VLT = factory × film ÷ 100 — the math isn't intuitive, which is why this calculator exists. The final number determines both how the tint looks and whether it meets legal limits.
Calculate your combined tint VLT
Set the factory glass VLT (typically 70–90% for residential, 70–85% for automotive) and the aftermarket film VLT.
Untinted glass is typically 70–90% VLT (auto 70–85%).
How window tint percentage works
Window tint percentage measures Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the amount of visible light that passes through the film and glass combined. A 50% tint allows half of visible light through, while a 5% tint (often called "limo tint") blocks 95% of visible light.
When you layer aftermarket tint over factory glass that already has some tint, the combined VLT drops. The formula multiplies the two values: factory glass at 80% VLT with a 35% VLT film produces a combined VLT of approximately 28%. That's why this calculator exists — the math isn't intuitive, and the final result determines both appearance and legal compliance.
Different film types achieve the same VLT with different performance characteristics. A ceramic window tint at 35% VLT rejects significantly more heat than a dyed film at the same percentage because ceramic particles block infrared energy without reducing visible light further. To understand how film types differ beyond just VLT, compare window film types side by side.
