Decorative window film in Houston, TX

Transform plain glass into frosted, etched, patterned, and custom-printed surfaces — for homes and businesses across the Houston metro area. Greenhouse Solar Control installs professional-grade adhesive decorative film (not removable static-cling) that resists peeling, bubbling, and edge curling for 10–15 years under Houston's heat and humidity.

Decorative window film transforms standard glass into frosted, etched, patterned, or custom-printed surfaces for Houston homes and commercial properties — adding privacy, branding, and style without replacing the glass itself. Greenhouse Solar Control has installed decorative film on bathroom windows, conference room partitions, storefront entrances, and residential front doors across the Houston metro area for over 15 years. Unlike removable static-cling products sold at hardware stores, professionally installed decorative film uses pressure-sensitive adhesive that bonds directly to glass, resisting peeling, bubbling, and edge curling for 10–15 years under Houston's heat and humidity. Whether you need a frosted privacy band across a bathroom window, a branded pattern on an office glass wall, or a full decorative finish on a restaurant partition, we measure, cut, and install every project on-site with a free estimate and workmanship guarantee.

What is decorative window film?

A category of window film applied to glass to enhance appearance, provide privacy, and add design — frosted, etched, patterned, gradient, and custom-printed finishes, without replacing the glass. Tap through the essentials below.

01 · Definition

Decorative window film is a category of window film applied to glass surfaces to enhance visual appearance, provide privacy, and add design elements — including frosted, etched, patterned, gradient, and custom-printed finishes — without replacing the glass.

02 · The category

It is a subset of the broader window film family, which also includes heat reduction, UV protection, security, and privacy films. Unlike performance-oriented films engineered primarily for solar heat rejection or impact resistance, decorative film is designed first for aesthetics — how the glass looks and how much visibility it allows.

Most decorative films also block 95–99% of UV radiation and provide partial heat reduction as secondary benefits, but their primary function is visual transformation and privacy control.

03 · For your space

Decorative film solves a privacy or design problem on almost any interior glass surface.

Bathroom & shower glass · conference rooms · storefront branding · front door sidelights · glass partitions · kitchen windows.

Types of decorative window film

Five main categories — each produces a different visual effect and privacy level. All rated for 10–15 years in Houston's climate.

Frosted Window Film

Replicates acid-etched or sandblasted glass at a fraction of the cost. Translucent white finish blocks direct line-of-sight while allowing 40–65% of natural light through. The most popular option we install — bathrooms, shower enclosures, front door sidelights, office partitions. Residential frosted window tinting →

Etched & Textured Film

Patterns that mimic cut glass, rice paper, linen weave, and geometric designs. From subtle linen weaves that soften without obscuring to bold Art Deco patterns. We carry 40+ etched and textured patterns from 3M, LLumar, and Solyx — for conference rooms, restaurant partitions, lobby glass.

Patterned & Printed Film

Repeating designs — dots, stripes, gradient bands, botanical motifs, abstract geometrics — printed directly onto film. Gradient dot patterns are popular for Houston storefronts: bottom-to-top fade for street-level privacy while keeping upper glass fully transparent.

Gradient & Transition Film

Transitions from opaque to transparent across the surface, creating a smooth fade. Most common: opaque at eye level (blocking sightlines) fading to fully clear above 6 feet. Single-band, dual-band, and center-band configurations available.

Custom Printed Film

Digitally printed with logos, brand graphics, wayfinding text, or bespoke artwork. The most common decorative application for Houston businesses — branded conference rooms, lobby identity walls, retail window graphics. Vector files preferred (AI/EPS/SVG). 7–10 business day turnaround from artwork approval.

Decorative film applications for Houston homes & businesses

Seven environments where decorative film solves a specific privacy or design problem.

Bathroom Decorative Window Film

The single most common decorative film installation we perform in Houston homes. Frosted or etched film provides full privacy without blocking the natural light that makes the space feel open — eliminating the need for blinds or curtains that trap moisture in Houston's humidity. We typically install medium-opacity frosted film (50–60% VLT) on standard bathroom windows, higher-opacity options on ground-floor or street-facing windows.

Common: White frost, rice paper texture, narrow-reed pattern

Office & Conference Room Privacy Film

A 42–54 inch frosted band installed at seated eye level (starting 30 inches from the floor) blocks direct sightlines while keeping the room visually connected to the open floor plan above and below the band. For executive offices and HR meeting rooms, we install full-coverage frosted or gradient film. Custom printed film with company logos turns glass walls into identity features.

Common: Frosted band, gradient fade, custom-branded print

Storefront & Retail Decorative Film

Houston storefronts use decorative film to control interior visibility from the sidewalk and reinforce brand identity. Gradient dot patterns are the most requested — they reduce glare and direct sightlines at street level while keeping upper window fully transparent. For seasonal promotions, we install removable printed graphics that can be replaced without residue.

Common: Gradient dot, custom printed brand graphics, frosted logo cutouts

Front Door & Sidelight Decorative Glass Film

Front doors with clear sidelights and transoms are a privacy vulnerability — visitors, delivery drivers, and passersby can see directly into the entryway. Etched or textured decorative film provides privacy without sacrificing the architectural character. Avoids the $500–$800 cost of replacing clear sidelights with factory-frosted panels.

Common: Etched geometric, narrow-reed texture, white frost

Kitchen Window Decorative Film

Kitchen windows — especially above sinks facing a neighbor — benefit from light decorative film that softens the view without darkening the workspace. We recommend low-opacity options (60–70% VLT) for kitchens because cooking and food prep require strong natural light. Patterned films with botanical or geometric motifs complement backsplash tile or cabinetry.

Common: Light frost, botanical pattern, linen texture

Shower Door Frosted Film

Frameless glass shower doors look modern but offer zero privacy in shared or guest bathrooms. We install moisture-resistant film rated for wet environments — standard decorative films can delaminate in shower steam. Our shower-rated frosted film uses a waterproof adhesive layer with sealed edges. Fully functional within 24 hours.

Common: Waterproof frosted, moisture-resistant etched

Glass Partition Decorative Film

For healthcare and dental offices, frosted partitions between treatment bays satisfy HIPAA visual privacy standards without solid walls. In restaurants, decorative film on glass dividers adds atmosphere while allowing staff sightlines. For partitions requiring both decorative appeal and impact resistance, we layer decorative film over security window film to meet safety codes.

Common: Custom branded, frosted band, gradient, decorative + security laminate

Decorative film vs. privacy film — how they overlap

Related but different problems. "Decorative privacy film" is a combination of visual design and light-blocking function.

FeatureDecorative FilmPrivacy Film
Primary purposeVisual design — patterns, textures, brandingBlock visibility — one-way or full obscurity
Daytime privacyPartial — depends on opacity and patternFull — reflective or opaque options
Nighttime privacyPartial — frosted obscures; patterned may notFull — dual-reflective or blackout options
Light transmissionModerate to high (40–80% VLT)Low to moderate (15–50% VLT)
Heat rejectionMinimal — not engineered for solar performanceModerate to high (40–70% reflective)
Design customizationHigh — patterns, textures, gradients, custom printsLow — typically solid reflective or neutral
Best forBathrooms, storefronts, office branding, entrywaysBedrooms, ground-floor living, street-facing offices

When they overlap: The most common "decorative privacy" request in Houston is frosted film for bathroom and bedroom windows — a decorative finish that also provides full daytime and nighttime obscurity. For applications where you need both pattern/design and strong privacy, we layer a decorative surface film over a privacy-grade base. For dedicated privacy installations without a decorative requirement, see our privacy window tinting service.

Residential vs. commercial decorative applications

The scope, film type, and scheduling differ between Houston homes and businesses.

For Houston homes

  • Focused on privacy, natural light control, and aesthetic enhancement
  • Most projects: 2–8 windows using frosted, etched, or patterned films
  • Common: bathroom privacy, front door sidelights, kitchen windows, shower doors, bedroom windows
  • Typically 2–4 hours, scheduled during regular business hours

Decorative window film cost in Houston

$6–$18 per sq ft installed · standard frosted at the low end · custom-printed at the high end.

Film TypeCost / Sq FtTypical / WindowNotes
Standard frosted$6–$9$75–$150Most common; bathroom, sidelight, office
Etched & textured$8–$12$100–$200Mid-range; conference rooms, lobbies
Patterned & gradient$9–$14$120–$225Design complexity drives cost
Custom printed/branded$12–$18$150–$350Requires design file; 7–10 day lead time

What affects your cost

  • Window count and size — larger projects (10+ windows) qualify for volume pricing that reduces the per-window cost by 15–25%.
  • Film complexity — a standard white frost costs roughly half of a custom-printed brand graphic on the same window.
  • Access difficulty — interior glass partitions at standard height are straightforward; high transom or exterior storefront glass requiring lift equipment adds $50–$100 per window.
  • Combination installs — adding decorative film during a heat reduction or privacy film project reduces per-window cost because mobilization and prep are shared.

All decorative film estimates are free and provided on-site after measurement. We do not quote decorative work from photos alone — film pattern alignment and edge finishing require seeing the glass in person.

How we install decorative window film

5 steps · 1mm pattern alignment · 7–15 day cure in Houston humidity.

1

On-site measurement & film selection

We measure each window or glass surface and confirm the film type, pattern orientation, and opacity level with you before ordering materials. For custom-printed films, we review your artwork file and produce a scaled proof for approval.

2

Glass surface preparation

The glass surface is cleaned with a professional-grade solution that removes oils, residue, and microscopic debris. Any existing film, stickers, or adhesive residue is stripped completely. Trapped debris under decorative film creates visible imperfections that cannot be corrected after application.

3

Wet application & positioning

We apply the film using a soapy slip solution between the adhesive face and the glass. This allows precise repositioning for pattern alignment — especially critical on etched and patterned films where seams, borders, or gradient bands must align with window frames. Once positioned, the film is squeegeed from center outward to remove air and solution.

4

Edge trimming & finishing

Film edges are trimmed with precision blades to leave a 1/16-inch gap between film and frame — this gap allows for thermal expansion without edge lifting. On frameless glass (shower doors, partitions), edges are sealed with a transparent edge sealant to prevent moisture intrusion.

5

Cure period

Decorative film reaches full adhesion in 7–15 days depending on Houston humidity and sun exposure. During curing, small water pockets or slight haziness may be visible — this is normal and clears completely as moisture evaporates through the film. Do not clean newly installed film for 30 days.

When decorative film may not be the right choice

Decorative window film is versatile, but it is not the right solution for every glass surface or every goal. We assess these factors during every free estimate.

When we recommend an alternative

We recommend alternatives when film is not appropriate for the glass or the goal.

  • Damaged or failing seals on dual-pane windows — applying adhesive film to a window with a broken seal can accelerate moisture intrusion between panes. We inspect seal integrity before recommending any film.
  • Exterior-facing decorative applications in direct sun — decorative films are engineered for interior application. Exterior mounting on south- or west-facing glass in Houston's UV environment degrades the film surface within 2–3 years. For exterior branding, we recommend printed perforated vinyl instead.
  • Full blackout privacy — decorative film diffuses and obscures but does not block 100% of light. If total room darkening is required (home theaters, photography studios), blackout window film or opaque vinyl is a better fit.
  • Historical or landmarked glass — some Houston historic districts restrict modifications to original glass. We verify HOA and historic preservation requirements before recommending film for protected properties.
  • Glass with existing Low-E coatings — certain decorative films can cause thermal stress on Low-E glass. We check the glass type and manufacturer specs to ensure compatibility before installation.

Decorative window film — answered

Cost, longevity, night privacy, removal, UV blocking, shower doors, decorative vs. tint, and commercial partitions. Still have a question? Call (281) 961-3058.

Decorative window film installed in Houston costs $6–$18 per square foot, with standard frosted film at $6–$9 and custom-printed branded film at $12–$18 per square foot. A typical bathroom window costs $75–$150 for frosted film. Commercial projects with 10+ windows receive volume pricing that reduces the per-window cost by 15–25%. We provide free on-site estimates for all decorative film projects.
Professionally installed decorative window film lasts 10–15 years on interior glass surfaces in Houston. Longevity depends on film quality, adhesive type, and sun exposure — south-facing windows experience slightly faster degradation than north-facing glass. The films we install from 3M, LLumar, and Solyx carry manufacturer warranties ranging from 5 to 15 years.
Frosted and etched decorative films provide privacy both day and night because they diffuse light in both directions regardless of lighting conditions. Patterned films with clear sections may allow partial visibility at night when interior lights are on and exterior light is low. For full day-and-night privacy, we recommend a medium- to high-opacity frosted film or a gradient film that covers the full window area at the sightline level.
Yes — professionally installed decorative window film removes cleanly without damaging the glass surface. Our removal process uses heat application and adhesive-dissolving solution to separate the film from the glass, followed by a full surface cleaning. Removal takes 10–20 minutes per window. DIY removal using razor blades risks scratching the glass — we recommend professional removal for this reason.
Most decorative window films block 95–99% of UV radiation as a byproduct of the film layer itself, even though UV protection is not the primary purpose. This UV filtering reduces furniture fading, hardwood floor discoloration, and artwork degradation in Houston homes where sun exposure is intense year-round.
Yes — we install moisture-resistant frosted and etched decorative film on frameless and framed glass shower doors. Standard decorative films are not rated for wet environments and can delaminate in shower steam. We use waterproof adhesive films specifically engineered for high-moisture applications, installed with sealed edges to prevent water intrusion behind the film surface.
Decorative window film is designed for visual appearance — frosted, etched, patterned, or printed surfaces that change how glass looks. Window tint is designed for solar performance — reducing heat, glare, and UV transmission. Decorative film is available in patterns and textures; tint film is typically a uniform shade applied for energy efficiency. Some projects combine both.
Yes — interior glass partition installations are one of our most common commercial decorative film projects in Houston. We install frosted bands, gradient fades, branded custom prints, and full-coverage frosted film on glass partition walls in offices, restaurants, medical facilities, and retail spaces. Commercial installations can be scheduled before or after business hours.
